The term libās (clothing/garment) in the Holy Qur’an is often restricted in interpretation to physical covering, whereas its diverse applications suggest far more profound and multi-layered connotations that cannot be accurately understood without a systematic semantic analysis. This article aims to clarify the semantic components of the term libās and reconstruct its semantic network in the Holy Qur’an based on synchronic semantics and the theory of rūḥ al-ma‘nā (the core meaning). It seeks to address two questions: what are the semantic components of libās in the Holy Qur’an, and how are these components formed through intra-textual relations? This fundamental research employs a descriptive-analytical method. It was conducted by extracting all verses containing the derivatives of the root “L-B-S,” analyzing syntagmatic and paradigmatic relations and context, and applying the findings to the theory of rūḥ al-ma‘nā. The findings demonstrate that the rūḥ al-ma‘nā (core meaning) of the term libās is “the placement of one thing upon another in such a way that it hinders direct vision, distinction, or perception.” This meaning manifests itself in the form of “encompassing coverage” accompanied by the functions of protection, tranquility, and identity formation, and it expands across material, moral, social, epistemological, ontological, and eschatological levels. This expansion is not metaphorical but possesses a real and intrinsic semantic nature. The result indicates that the term libās in the Qur’an possesses a networked and systematic concept that plays a pivotal role in explaining the human relationship with the body, faith, truth, and ultimate destiny, serving as a clear example of the efficacy of the rūḥ al-ma‘nā theory in understanding the language of the Qur’an.
