Understanding the teachings of the Qur’an has been a central concern for Muslims, especially scholars of Qur’anic sciences, since the dawn of Islam. One of the key methods for uncovering these teachings is through close attention to the rhetorical devices employed in divine verses. Among these devices is figurative language (majāz), whose presence in the Qur’an is affirmed by strong textual and rational evidence. Since every rhetorical feature in the Qur’an serves a specific divine purpose, exploring the wisdom behind the use of majāz is of particular importance. Given Allāmah Ṭabāṭabā’ī’s prominent status in the exegetical tradition, uncovering his perspective on this matter is essential for a precise understanding of Qur’anic meaning. This article, drawing upon al-Mīzān fī Tafsīr al-Qur’ān and other exegetical, lexical, and rhetorical sources, employs a descriptive-analytical method to address the central question: What is Allāmah Ṭabāṭabā’ī’s view on the rationale behind figurative language in the Qur’an? The findings reveal that Allāmah believes the wisdom of majāz in the Qur’an includes: expressing abstract and imperceptible realities through tangible terms; facilitating understanding for the general public; speaking in familiar, conventional language; maintaining rhetorical decorum; and offering moral guidance to humanity.
